AT&T partners with TeleNav on GPS workforce management solution March 31, 2007

AT&T has announced a partnership with TeleNav, to implement a workforce management solution utilizing TeleNavTrack:

TeleNav Track is an affordable enterprise-grade application for companies of all sizes and includes multiple features, such as GPS-enabled location-tracking, mileage-tracking, wireless time sheets, alerts and detailed location-reporting to capture field data. A premium version of TeleNav Track is also available with features including wireless forms, dispatching, barcode- scanning support and voice and on-screen turn-by-turn GPS directions. Initially, TeleNav Track is available on the new BlackBerry® 8800 and HP iPAQ hw6920 Mobile Communicator, both of which have integrated GPS.

TomTom unveils GO 715 March 21, 2007

TomTom GO 715.gifTomTom has announced the TomTom GO 715, a new GPS receiver that is integrated into the TomTom WORK Compact GPS tracking solution.

The TomTom GO 715 is limited to to Western Europe however, and the company has not announced plans to expand it to North America. A more comprehensive solution, TomTom WORK active, is available in the U.S., Canada and Europe. It utilizes the TomTom GO 510, 710 and 910. Alzheimer’s GPS bracelet coming to U.S.? March 15, 2007

Columba GPS tracking bracelet.jpgLast year I posted a story about GPS tracking of Alzheimer’s patients. It turns out that Medical Intelligence Technologies, makers of the Columba GPS bracelet are expanding aggressively in Europe and are courting partners for a U.S. introduction by the end of 2007.

According to an article in The (Montreal) Gazette, the GPS tracking bracelet “sells for $300 plus a $60 per month subscriber fee. Government reimbursement of the cost is an active issue in marketing the device.” In the U.S. the issue may be reimbursement by private insurance.

GPS fleet tracking and data transmission costs March 13, 2007

The recent announcement of the Maya GPS fleet tracking solution highlights the ongoing management costs of such a system. According to the manufacturer, NovaTracker:

Fleet managers consistently report that as much as 50 percent of the information they receive from a GPS solution isn’t precisely what they need, so the other half results in higher transmission costs. MAYA™ is the only device on the market today that will transmit information the customer has specified with as many as 16 different variables.

Sounds like a great idea doesn’t it? GPS tracking of your dog or cat, which is prone to wandering. Unfortunately, your options are a little limited, for the time being anyway. Before
we get to our GPS pet tracking recommendations, lets look at the two main types of tracking and the products currently available:

GPS pet tracking via cell phone carrier

The first two devices transmit location data via cell phone transmission. One advantage of this is that you can track your pet via the Internet, cell phone, etc. These devices will not work in areas without cell coverage. There is typically an ongoing service charge with these devices.
