Garmin Fleet Management GPS tracking February 19, 2007
Posted by Rich in : GPS fleet tracking , 3 commentsGarmin, which dominates the consumer GPS market, entered the fleet tracking arena last week with the announcement of the Garmin Fleet Management Interface. This move is very similar to TomTom’s recent announcement of their WORK GPS fleet tracking system.
Like TomTom’s program, the Garmin Fleet Management Interface is designed to work with existing Garmin devices — the StreetPilot, nuvi and zumo lines. This could be an ideal solution for managers who need fleet tracking, and would also benefit from their drivers having a GPS navigation device. (more…)
GPS devices stolen - thieves easily located January 26, 2007
Posted by Rich in : GPS fleet tracking, GPS vehicle tracking , add a commentA year ago, the town of Babylon, New York, acquired 300 GPS tracking devices, and placed many of them in the town’s fleet of maintenance vehicles. Recently, 14 of the devices were stolen from the Department of Public Works maintenance yard. The thieves apparently thought they were simply cell phones.
The town fired up their GPS tracking system and, lo and behold, it led them right to one of the thieves. Case solved.
TomTom WORK GPS fleet tracking January 13, 2007
Posted by Rich in : GPS fleet tracking, GPS tracking employees, GPS vehicle tracking , 1 comment so farTomTom, better known for their consumer car navigation systems, has announced TomTom WORK. Combining the best of both worlds, TomTom WORK provides GPS fleet tracking for managers, while also providing GPS navigation for drivers.
The system has three components:
- TomTom WEBFLEET: an easy to use web-based service, giving access to 24-hour vehicle management and comprehensive reporting tools. TomTom WEBFLEET allows businesses to view their vehicles’ and drivers’ exact locations and manage new tasks.
- TomTom LINK: a compact, small unit placed inside each vehicle, allowing users to automatically and cost effectively transfer current vehicle positions (using GPS) and other information (via GPRS) to TomTom WEBFLEET.
- A TomTom portable navigation device (PND): either the TomTom GO 910 or TomTom GO 510.
Two-way communication is enabled as well:
Office-based managers can communicate with drivers by sending orders and text messages, enabling client orders and locations to be updated and new tasks and navigation coordinates to be sent to appropriate drivers. Drivers can send (standard) messages on order and work status.
The cost is less than $2 per day for TomTom WEBFLEET, $500 for TomTom LINK (per vehicle), plus the cost of the PND.

Posted by Rich in : GPS asset tracking, GPS fleet tracking, GPS vehicle tracking , add a commentFleet tracking is a specialized form of GPS asset tracking that utilizes other technologies as well. Often lumped together under the term mobile resource management (MRM), this technology suite can utilize GPS, RFID, and Wi-Fi. Telematics is another term used to describe this field, which can help reduce fuel, labor and insurance costs, and even the number of vehicles required to meet management’s needs.
A study by C.J. Driscoll and Associates indicates that 1.9 million GPS/wireless devices are used for this purpose, and that the market will grow to 5.9 million by 2009. Automatic vehicle location (AVL) is one of the most commonly used components of MRM.
