Alltell Wireless has introduced their own child tracking service, dubbed Axcess Family Finder. The cost is $9.99 a month per child application. Normal airtime charges apply though it appears that there is no other charge each time you check the location.
From the press release announcing the GPS child tracking service:
Axcess Family Finder features easy-to-use interactive maps to monitor or guide family members to specific locations…The Axcess Family Finder Web site also supports added security measures with Scheduled Checks which allows parents to register specific locations to be tracked during certain times. GPS technology is used to locate the child’s phone, and the parents’ phones can receive a text message automatically notifying them of the child’s location.

The small detail that is hugely important — and left out — is that Alltel has only a few phones considered to be “capable” of using this service. Only two of them are phones that teens will like or want — and one of those is too expensive to give a kid ($300).

My reason for wanting the device would be not to “track” but “locate” my child should something happen to them. I would think typically if they were taken, hurt, etc., the phone is going to be lost or thrown away. Any other device we can use to track children?
